Maastricht University has decided to withdraw its support of the wireless Internet trial project in the centre of Maastricht. The UM states that it is giving priority to other projects, such as the MUSL student registration system. The city council is disappointed and has now also pulled out.

The idea was to set up a Wi-Fi network in the centre of town that students and staff could use free of charge to log onto the Internet, even from the pavement cafés. Tourists and day-trippers would also get access, but at a charge. The university was to contribute a least a million euros.

André Postema, vice president of the Executive Board, emphasised that it all started with wireless Internet in the UM buildings. “That facility is state of the art and for us that is the main thing. We initially supported the idea of expanding this network to the city centre, but at the moment we have enough on our plates with the new ICT projects, in particular MUSL. A lot of time will pass before we have this system running as it should.” It is a fact that MUSL cost more than was expected.

Few pubs and restaurants already have their private "open" wifi spot; hope cancelling this project will encourage entrepreneurs to provide wifi as a basic facility in and outside.

It's kind of the cream and sugar with your coffee: you don't have to use it, but if they don't serve it, service stinks... ;)

In Heerlen they launched wifi allover the city yesterday - HeerlenLive
