Anders nog iets voor u?

Tentoonstelling over Limburgse winkeliers en kleinhandelaars door de eeuwen heen.

We denken er vaak met weemoed aan terug: de kleine bakker op de hoek die we aanspraken met Pie, de slager waar je als kind steevast een schijfje worst kreeg, of de apotheker, die bij iedere bittere pil een sterk verhaal leverde. Winkeliers en ondernemers horen bij de stad: sterker nog, zonder kleinhandel bestaat de stad niet.

Vaak lijkt het alsof de karakteristieke winkels uit de stad verdwenen zijn: in Weert had je de veel bezongen Antje van de Statie die haar vlaaien verkocht op het station, in Sittard kleine Sjef Vink die op zijn autoped het vlees rondbracht van de slagerij van zijn ouders, en in Maastricht apotheek Geusgens, waar je niet weg kwam zonder dat de geestige apothekers een grap met je hadden uitgehaald.

Centre Céramique toont 'Anders nog iets voor u' een tentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van de kleinhandel in Limburg. Over Romeinse slagers uit Heerlen, middeleeuwse pottenbakkers uit Brunssum en 19de en 20ste eeuwse kledingmakers en handelaren als Schunck en Hertzdahl, die klein in één stad begonnen, en later filialen kregen in heel Limburg. En niet te vergeten: de Italiaans ijssalons Milano en Venezia, en de superhippe Maastrichtse boetiek van Joep en Henny Groenteman, met flitsende modeshows, waar Monique van de Ven haar eerste doorkijkbloesje kocht… Een cultuurhistorische tentoonstelling vol met verhalen, anekdotes, foto's, illustraties en bijzondere archeologische vondsten uit de Limburgse oudheid. Winkeliers en ondernemers horen bij de stad, sterker nog, zonder kleinhandel bestaat de stad niet.

An exhibition on Limburg shopkeepers and retailers through the centuries

We often look back on them with nostalgia: the small corner bakery where we called the baker by his first name, the butchers where you were always offered a slice of sausage as a child, or the pharmacist who always had a tall tale for every bitter pill. Shopkeepers and business owners belong to the city: indeed, without the retail trade, there would be no city. It often seems as though these typical, friendly shops have disappeared from the cities of Limburg: in Weert you had the much sung-about Antje van de Statie who sold her flan pies at the train station, in Sittard you had dear Truke from Schmeits butchers, and in Maastricht you had the pharmacy Geusgens, where you couldn't leave before the pharmacists had played a joke on you.

Centre Céramique will be showing 'Would you like anything else?', an exhibition about the history of shopkeepers and small entrepreneurs in Limburg. About the Roman potters from Heerlen, mediaeval butchers and pill peddlers, and retailers and tailors such as Schunck and Hertzdahl, who started out small in one city, before establishing several branches in the whole province. A cultural historical exhibition with stories, anecdotes, photos, illustrations and special archaeological finds from ancient Limburg.
